There is a way to stay sober without going to meetings or rehab. Turning down a drink at times may be difficult, but making the promise to yourself to remain sober is the trick and will work for some. I just happen not to be one of them and I believe that there are many ways for a person to get sober. The first step is recognizing that you have a problem. Once you have done this, you can then start working on your goal to stay sober.
Identify the situations, things, and people that have an influence on you to drink. Once you have done this, you then you will most definitely need to separate yourself from these people and things. Avoid spending long periods of time with individuals who drink, and avoid going to those places that encourage you to drink as well. I am of the opinion that most people just learning to stop drinking should avoid being around people that drink period, that is until you get strong enough mentally. After a little while of being clean you will find that there are many benefits of staying sober.

Stress can be a big encourager of people whom drink. In this case, you need to find wholesome activities to participate in as well as adopting relaxation techniques to help you deal with stress rather than drinking. Maybe you would want to take up a new hobby or pursue a previous one that you never got to enjoy because you were always involved with drinking booze. You may be surprised how much stress this relives and find that you are really enjoying yourself. What a concept an alcoholic actually learning to enjoy their selves.
In order to successfully make these changes, you must surround yourself with people who will support this change. You may need to adopt new friends who don’t drink. Become a regular member of a church. You will find many people in this environment who don’t support drinking.
The key to staying sober is to build you a support group. Church group or members can often provide you with the support and guidance you need to stay free of alcohol. Believe it or not, they can also help you keep your commitment to stop drinking. As the days go by, it will get easier and easier.
If this does not work for you then you may have no other option than to start going to AA meetings or checking into an alcohol addiction rehab. Do not be afraid to do this because you will be surrounded by others just like yourself who are trying to learn how to stop drinking.
